Accordion
The accordion is originally a European instrument and belongs to the aerophone family. It was invented in the early 19th century. In the same century the accordion was initially introduced in Brazil by Portuguese immigrants and later in the twentieth century by Italian immigrants. In Brazil the instrument is most popular in the Northeast and South. In baião it is part of the traditional ensemble together with the zabumba, pandeiro and triangle. Also in forró the instrument plays a central role.
