Surdo

Surdo

The surdo is a membranophone. It is the biggest Brazilian drum and fundamental in samba music. It constitutes the basic rhythm and the heart of the samba. Its deep sound crosses any wall. In contrast with the bass drum that normally beats on one and three, in samba music a surdo beats on two and four, on the "offbeat". It is made of wood or aluminum and it has skins on both sides of the drum. It is played with sticks. During Brazilian carnival they are considerably decorated.
